‘Zakir Ali Posed As Sandeep To Marry Me’: Assamese Woman Filed Case Against Husband Three Years After Marriage

Zakir Ali, a resident of Nazarpur Khurd village of Amroha district in Uttar Pradesh, went to Guwahati for work some years ago. There he met a woman named Jaya Devi, a resident of village Bhootnath.

He introduced himself as Sandeep to her, and the two entered into a relationship. They got married and went on to have three children. After three years of their marriage, Jaya has found the truth about him. On her complaint, a case under charges of Uttar Pradesh’s anti-forced conversion law has been registered against him.

The FIR:

The First Information Report in the case (number—41/2023) was registered at the Amroha Dehat police station on 1 February 2023. The first page of the FIR can be seen below:

The FIR

The complainant told the police that Zakir posed as a Hindu man Sandeep to marry her. Fifteen days ago, he left her at Guwahati to come to Amroha. She came searching for him and found that he is a Muslim and his name is Zakir Ali, and he is already married.

What The Police Told The Media:

The Deputy Superintendent of Police of Amroha, Vijay Kumar Rana, told the media that they have registered a case against Zakir.

The woman will undergo a detailed medical check-up and teams have been raiding places to arrest the culprit, he said.

Zakir has been booked under IPC section 376 (rape) and sections 3 and 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 2021.

What The Victim Told The Media:

As per a report by Dainik Bhaskar, the victim says that three years ago, the man came to Guwahati for work. He worked at a scrap workshop near her house. They got in touch and soon, Sandeep proposed to her for marriage.

After she accepted the proposal, he took her to Patna where they got married in a temple as per Hindu rituals.

They lived like husband and wife for three years, and went on to have three children. Every time Jaya asked to take her to meet his parents, he would make an excuse. Fifteen days ago, he asked her to convert to Islam. Jaya refused, after which he left home saying he is going for work.

After Sandeep did not return for many days, she went to his workplace. He took his address from there to reach Amroha. After coming to Amroha, she found his true name was Zakir Ali and that he is Muslim. She found that Zakir is also married to a woman from his Muslim community.

The victim reached out to Amroha police for help but to no avail as they asked her to file a case in Assam as it was there that Zakir trapped her. She somehow got in touch with volunteers of Hindu Yuva Vahini and Bhartiya Janta Party-affiliated panchayat leader Pavneet Kumar. They helped her and a case was registered in Amroha.

A video statement by the victim can be seen here.

The Activists:

Sanskar Katyal from Hindu Yuva Vahini’s Moradabad chapter told Rashtra Jyoti that the Amroha police initially tried to cover up the case and protect the accused by asking her to go back to Assam. Outside the police station, however, she met some men who made her contact the Hindu organisation.

Katyal said that Jaya told them that Zakir had his ears pierced, used to go to the temple, and would celebrate every occasion like any other Hindu, and so it was shocking for her to find that he is Muslim.

Pavneet Kumar told the media that after he learned that a Hindu woman from Assam had been trapped in the vicious web of ‘love jihad’, he and his team members immediately contacted her and made sure a case was registered.
