Yet another interfaith marriage between a Hindu woman and a Muslim man has ended with the woman losing her life. In Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, a man identified as Wasi Ahmad allegedly gave electric shocks to his wife Uma Sharma alias Afsa Fatima, resulting in her death on 22 December.
The UP police have arrested the accused.

The Case
As per a report by Amar Ujala, Wasi Ahmad (32) and Uma Sharma (30) got married seven years ago. They were neighbours.
Uma converted to Islam to marry him, and her name was changed to Afsa Fatima. They had two children from the marriage, both sons. The first child, Haider, is four years old Haider while the other, Humayun, is two and a half years old.
Wasi and Fatima lived with Wasi’s mother Ashiya. His father Mohammad Safi died several years ago. Wasi’s elder brother Rafi is mentally unstable.
As per Wasi’s mother, they used to live in the Mannuganj area of Kheri until Wasi’s marriage. But after Uma left her house to marry Wasi against her parents’ wish, they left the area and moved to Hafizpur.
Ashiya told the Navbharat Times that the couple used to fight a lot. Wasi used to beat her up. Ashiya said that no matter how much she intervened, they never stopped fighting. The newspapers however have not given the reason for their fighting.

After Fatima gave birth to the first child, Ashiya started to believe that their marriage would work. However, fights intensified, Ashiya told the media.
Earlier this month, Uma left home without telling anyone. Ashiya went to Kanpur to her daughter’s house on 15 December. On 22 December, Wasi called her to say that Fatima had left the house. Uma had left the house on an earlier occasion as well.
Ashiya returned to her house. Wasi however was not giving her clear answered. Eventually, he broke and said that he killed Uma as she was thinking of going to police against him.
He said he buried her body in their bedroom. After listening to him, Ashiya informed the police, she told the media.
As per Dainik Bhaskar, Uma’s family cut all contact with her after she married Wasi. Her family told the media that she was dead for them the day she eloped with Wasi. As per reports, nobody from her family came forward to claim her body.
The Police
Rashtra Jyoti called up the Gola Police Station on 25 December 2022. The Circle Officer, Rajesh Kumar, said that they had arrested Wasi earlier in the day. he said that postmortem reports of Uma’s body matched the confession of the accused that he killed her through electric shock.
He said that a First Information Report (number—850/2022) has been registered against Wasi under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence).
The officer said that the police were informed about the case by the accused’s mother.
