A 22-year-old man named Sonu Ansari was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on 22 November 2022, for allegedly raping a woman from a scheduled caste. As per police, the victim says that Ansari used a false religious identity to enter into a relationship with her.
As per police statement and media reports, one Sonu Ansari introduced himself as Sonu to befriend a Hindu woman, thereby hiding his Muslim religious identity. On learning that she was alone at her house, he barged in and raped her.
After rape, he tried convincing the victim not to go to the police with the promise of marriage.
As per the press note released by the police, the victim’s father in his complaint letter given to the police on 21 November 2022 said that Sonu Ansari, a resident of the railway colony area, raped his daughter on 20 November. Sonu barged into his house around 10 in the night.
A case was then registered at the Obra Police Station in the Sonbhadra district.
The victim belongs to a scheduled caste.
The Sonbhadra police have booked the accused under IPC section 376 (rape) and 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Castes Prevention of Atrocities act, commonly referred to as the SC-ST Act.
Sonu was arrested near his house on 22 November by the Obra police.

The victim talked briefly to the media at the police station. She said that he made sexual relationship with her on the pretends of marriage. Asked by reporters why she did not accept his offer of marriage, she said that was because he Muslim and had lied to her. Watch the video here.
