A man named Amit Kumar, who worked as a salesman at V-mart mall in Agra, was allegedly fired form his job after he refused to wear the ‘Santa Cap’ all day citing his Hindu identity. After the incident, local Hindu activists assembled in front of the mall to protest.
Agra police have reportedly booked three people including the store manager.
With New Year around, shops and malls use various tactics to draw customers’ attention. A store manager at the mall, Vikram, asked all his employees to wear ‘Santa Cap’. He said he had to share the pictures with the company headquarter.
As per reports, Amit did wear the cap for the picture but after getting it clicked, he removed it. Vikram asked him to wear the cap again, threatening him with consequences if he did not. Amit did not wear the cap, saying he is Hindu and does not believe in Santa. He was fired from the job.
The incident happened on 23 December.
Soon, volunteers of a group named ‘The Youth Brigade’ reached the mall and started protesting. The police arrived and registered a case against Vikram, one Prateek and one more person.
Amit alleged that he was not paid the salary for the month of December.
Indian Express quotes Sadar Deputy SP Archana Singh as saying, “We have registered the FIR against three persons, but no arrests have been made so far as our investigation is underway.”
As per the report, the three were booked under IPC 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).
