Amid diversions following the visit of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath to Gorakhpur, a man made a hoax call about a bomb in the Gorakhnath temple. The accused was later booked by the police under charges of fraud and was sent to jail.
The accused identified as 24-year-old Qurban Ali on 1 January called the police control room saying that four people carrying a bomb in a cake box had entered the Gorakhnath temple.
A First Information Report (number—03/2023) in this case was registered at the Cantt police station of the Gorakhpur district on 1 January.
The Police Station in-charge, Bhushan Rai stated in the FIR that around 12:30 in the night, they received a call. The man introduced himself as Shamshad, and said that four people have reached the temple with a bomb. The CM was staying at the temple hence all the police teams came into action mode.
Citing security of the CM, officials started checking people entering the temple and deployed more forces in the nearby areas.

Meanwhile, the police teams also started tracking the number from which they had received the call. The number belonged to one Qurban Ali, a resident of Dharmpur Janpad of Vaishali district in Bihar. His current address was near the Golghar area.
The police tried locating Ali in the golghar area but failed.
However, they managed to catch hold of a man near Carmel road, who introduced himself as Qurban. They received a Vivo mobile phone, the records of which suggested that he had made the call to the control room.
A recording of the call was also available on the phone. Ali had introduced himself as Shamshad and said that four people wearing black dresses entered the temple with a machine bomb in a cake box.
They had long hair and were wearing caps, he said.
The police arrested and interrogated him. During interrogation, he said that he wanted to teach a lesson to the police. He has done this in the past as well. His driving license and aadhar card had a fake address, the police said.
As per a report by Dainik Bhaskar, Ali delivers goods at a bakery in the industrial area of Gorakhpur. He was going to deliver goods in the morning. A police constable scolded him near Dharmshala market for violating traffic rules over which he felt offended.
It was then he decided to teach a lesson to the police and hence made a hoax bomb call.
Following his call, the District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police with the dog squad reached the temple.
The police teams came into action as one such incident had happened in the Gorakhnath temple last year.
On 2 April, one Murtaza attacked the police with a sharp weapon. He attacked two PAC officials with the weapon and was arrested later. He was a resident of the civil lines area.
It is noteworthy that the police later found a terrorist link in this case as well.
As far as Ali’s case is concerned, he was presented before the magistrate on the same day of his arrest from where he was sent to jail. The ‘terror group’ link in this case is yet to be explored, reports said.
He has been booked under IPC sections 419 (cheating), 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (fraudulently using genuine documents) and 182 (spreading false information).
As per a report by Dainik Jagran, Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover told the media that a man called the police control room using a fake name about a bomb being planted in the temple. The investigations revealed that he was spreading fake information.
The Gorakhpur police also informed about the incident from their official twitter handle.
