A Hindu man who was in love with a Muslim woman was allegedly exploited by a maulvi to the extent that he killed himself. As per the victim’s family, the maulvi and an accomplice promised the victim that they would get him married to his beloved.
The deceased, identified as Deepak Kumar, lost everything he had to make sure the cleric was happy. He was sure that the cleric would reunite him with his love, but it led to nothing, the family says.
The incident took place on 17 January in Jharkhand’s Ranchi. Deepak allegedly uploaded a status on Whatsapp saying ‘Alvida doston, Nadeem aur Maulana ko yaad rakhna’ (Good Bye friends, remember Nadeem and the cleric).
Rashtra Jyoti called up the Ranchi police on 19 January. A case against the cleric and Nadeem has been registered by the victim’s father at Sukhdeo Nagar police station. The officer said they are investigating the matter and hence he cannot share any details with the media.
As per a report by News 18 Jharkhand, Deepak was in love with a Muslim woman. They had a relationship for almost four years until the woman left for Bangalore for a job.
After leaving Ranchi she started distancing herself from Deepak.
Deepak who was deeply in love with the girl could not take it. He started meeting people who claimed superpowers.
Deepak’s brother Suraj told the media that first, he met a man named Mihir Adhikari who in the name of witchcraft fooled him and also took him to Bengal.
Having no relief, he shared his plight with a friend named Nadeem.
Nadeem said that he knew a cleric who could solve all his problems. Deepak met him and then they both started extorting money from Deepak. An emotionally vulnerable Deepak gave them everything he had; he even sold his bike to pay the cleric’s fee.
Finding no solution to his problem and financially broke, he killed himself.
Nadeem and the cleric asked him to convert to Islam, as per a report by Dainik Bhaskar.
Suraj told the media that once, Deepak argued with a man named Arshad on a religious matter. Nadeem took revenge for that argument, he added.
Deepak had started following everything the cleric told him to; he would tell people how wonderful is Islam. He would wear ‘Surma’ as well, told Suraj.
As per the victim’s sister, the woman used to visit Deepak’s room. When she stopped meeting him, he slipped into depression. It was Deepak’s sister who first saw him hanging in the room. They lived in the Chuna Bhatta area in a rented room.
She said that her elder sister saw Deepak’s status on WhatsApp and called her asking what had happened to him. She reached his room where he was hanging from the ceiling fan.
Deepak’s father is a retired Border Security Force (BSF) employee. He gave a complaint against the cleric and Nadeem the next day Deepak committed suicide.
A report by ETV Bharat quoted the Rural Superintendent of Police, Naushad Alam, as saying that a statement by the victim’s father had been recorded. The police were informed on 18 January about the incident whereas the suicide took place on the night of 17. They have initiated an investigation and the culprits would be caught soon, he told the media.
